How to Remove AI Watermarks From a Word Document

· 4 min read · GhostVerb team

When you paste AI-written text into Word, everything comes along, including characters you can't see. And if the text came from a model that watermarks its wording, that pattern comes too. Here's how to deal with both without breaking your document.

Step 1: find hidden characters in Word

Word can reveal some of them. Turn on Show/Hide ¶ (Home tab, or Ctrl+Shift+8). No-break spaces appear as a small degree-like symbol (°) instead of a dot. But zero-width characters stay invisible even then, so you need another way to see them.

The quickest check is to copy the document's text into the free hidden character checker. It highlights zero-width spaces, joiners, tag characters and look-alike letters, all in your browser.

Step 2: remove them with Find and Replace

Word's Find and Replace (Ctrl+H, with Use wildcards left off) can target characters by their decimal code with ^u. Run one search per character:

  • No-break space: find ^s, replace with a normal space.
  • Narrow no-break space (U+202F): find ^u8239, replace with a normal space.
  • Zero-width space (U+200B): find ^u8203, replace with nothing.
  • Zero-width non-joiner / joiner (U+200C, U+200D): find ^u8204, then ^u8205, replace with nothing.
  • Word joiner (U+2060): find ^u8288, replace with nothing.
  • Byte order mark (U+FEFF): find ^u65279, replace with nothing.

Find and Replace keeps your formatting, so this is safe to run on the whole document. Save a copy first anyway.

Step 3: wording-level watermarks need a rewrite

Watermarks like Google's SynthID aren't characters at all. They're a pattern in which words were chosen, so no find-and-replace touches them. The words themselves have to change. Doing that by hand means rewriting every paragraph and then restoring the bold text, links and styles you lose when you paste text back. That's slow for anything over a page.

The one-step way

GhostVerb does all three steps on the .docx itself:

  • Upload the document and pick the paragraphs to rewrite.
  • Hidden characters are removed throughout the file, including paragraphs you don't rewrite.
  • Chosen paragraphs are rewritten in your own voice, with bold, italics, colours and links carried into the new wording.
  • You download the same file, with fonts, tables, images, layout and document details (author, dates) unchanged.
